Do you think this will help the Ladbrokes/Betdaq exchange?

It can hardly do any worse, the top guy is a digital evangelist so I'd imagine online stuff will form a big part of their future. But I guess we will have to wait and see.

Two winners here will be the Purple Exchange and PP.

Coral and Ladbrokes will be forced to sell off competing shops which PP will be in a good place to cherry pick. The Betdaq exchange will get the short term boost of the Coral Hedging. While in the long term they will look to merge and offset their books the two wont be able to achieve this in the short term.

Personally I cannot fathom the move, obviously there is a lot of savings to be made in scaling of economies. However, neither are exactly setting the world alight with their efficiencies or performance over the past few years so no guarantee of making these savings in the short term.

Its going to be personally annoying with the RWC coming up another opinion gone, and a list of others following like sheep. :(

I have to admit i was really worried what this might mean for Betdaq, as i really wanted there to be two strong exchanges going forward.

However, i feared for the worst when Ladbrokes first took over Betdaq, and those fears proved misplaced as if anything it improved things quite a lot.

Really hope this merger helps improve things for the better too and makes the exchange even stronger, though as you say it is just a case of wait and see.

It depends where they see the most profitablity. I think they both lag behind PP and Betfair in the online/mobile innovation space, so thats an area they will be looking to expand. I am thinking more though in terms of the Sportsbook , online casino, Poker and all that malarky.
It remains to be seen if they want to invest heavily in Betdaq. Betfair has such a dominance of the exchange business and so far, whilst Betdaq has no doubt improved, they have made little real gain on Betfair

I worked for Ladbrokes for 5 years until 1994

I remember being in a meeting where a guy from security expressed his vision of the future. He was basically laughed at, bosses describing him from 'Tomorrow's World'

Basically, Ladbrokes were giulty of extreme arrogance. They didn't believe anything, including technology, could dismantle thier position as the country's leading bookmaker. They were far too slow to embrace the digital age - companies like Bet365, Betfair, Paddy Power, Stan James etc were absolute nobody's 20 years ago

Cheers for the link Peter - good to see some growth in Betdaq but only 3% is barely growth.

Do you have any take outs from the results given your good knowledge of reading such documents?

There was just an interview on Channel 4 with the head guy at Ladbrokes (Didn't catch his name or job title) and he was talking about the merger and also the PP and BF merger. Not once was the Betdaq/Ladbrokes exchange despite Nick Luck asking about Betfair.

I was just waiting on him to say we have our own competing exchange but nope, no such words crossed his lips :(
