How has T20 cricket affected the run rates in test cricket?

Thought this was an interesting bunch of observations: -

International T20 cricket was introduced in 2005 and was an instant hit with TV audiences with its coloured kit, cheerleaders and fireworks. It brought cricket into the 21st century and undeniably has increased the appeal of the sport.

However, one of the assertions frequently made by cricket commentators is how T20 cricket has affected run rates in Test cricket.

There's no doubt that T20 has had a positive impact on skill levels within international cricket; scoop, ramp, switch hit and reverse sweep shots are now often seen in the longer form of the game and are a direct result of the impact of the T20 format and the improvisation it demands.

However is it true that run rates in Test cricket have increased as a direct result of the introduction of T20 cricket?
