I am currently building a database of horses for back to lay trading, and I think i saw somewhere that there is a website that you can use to record these horses.

It allows you to keep records and it will also send you an alert when they are next due to race.

Is that true or have I made that up?

There are free horse tracking services, where you get an email night before horse runs.
Found at sporting life, racing post and maybe others eg ATR and RUK.
Not sure if thats what you mean or require.

The best course of action would be to note down your selections/results on your own spreadsheet and then cross reference with a number of sites ie:
