Hate to tell you this gstar but Parliament doesn't have the power to 'make' Betfair do anything other than what's legally required of them, and they can't legislate for Betfair and not other exchanges.

If I remember correctly only 176 people signed the petition to legislate for bookies to accept a minimum bet so you'll do well to attain the 100K required!

altho the sentiment is admirable, i'm not sure if the title *MAKE* Betfair etc is going to be received as warmly as if it were titled something more along the lines of *Lobby* Betfair...

i also think it's far too simplistic a view to take. altho technically the market not going in play is a problem for some, there are many that this won't affect (and may even benefit).

I'm not being negative on this, just think it's not as cut 'n dried as that.

Even if that was anything to do with parliament, you might have noticed they have bigger fish to fry these days. You'd be more productive petitioning for the UK to continue adhere to EU legislation on borderless gambling. The entire premise of the EU is that some countries are strong in manufacturing, some strong in services and some strong on labour, you can't pick and choose. So when we do our lemmings off a cliff routine in November there's no guarantee what will happen to the services sector, incl gambling. Nothing might happen or something might happen, even 1.01's lose. So that's a gamble this particular turkey didn't vote for and any trader who did needs their head examining.

The trouble I have with the EU and gambling is that one by one they outlawed exchanges. I actually visited a few countries for Betfair in the early days to promote exchanges, but there are pretty much none left now. Though Ireland would be a bummer!

Uncertainty is usually an ingredient for profit, this is one uncertainty I'm less happy about. I've worked too hard to casually accept even a 1000/1 risk.

That's the page I saw when I looked at the petition number page.

Gstar, you need to publish your petition text on here before anyone can support you, or is the title of this thread the full petition?

I think you'll find Gstar that it's 6 of one 1/2 dozen of the other. I do a lot of back to lays (lay in-running) and it's been annoying when the market didn't go in play and I would have profitted. However there have been the odd occasions when I've won far more because betfair allowed the bets placed in the win market prior to the 'off' to stand and my horse I wanted to trade has won.

What about the punters that back or lay a horse as a straight bet, will their bets get voided too?

yes, i think as i said in my initial comment, it's far too broad and too many caveats to simply void all bets...

I believe from my experience when they can't turn the markets in-play they've tended to allow the 'pre-off' bets to stand. So in theory if you laid something outright and it lost then you would still be paid out and vice versa. The problem arises more for those who place back to lay or lay to back in-running finding out later their bets have just become straight lays (pardon the expression) or backs.

The list is wrong. Betfair doesnt accept customers from Germany and Austria for the exchange for example. Poland also introduced strict gambling laws a while ago. Betfair exchange isnt available in most european countries.
