I want to improve my basic football ratings...

Football, Soccer - whatever you call it. It is the beautiful game.

I recently put together a basic football ratings spreadsheet. It's fine at what it does, and it gives me a starting point for assessing matches. However, I would like to try to raise it from basic to intermediate.

I'm open to suggestions as to what are felt to be important variables that could influence any match - particularly those variables that can be interpreted (even subjectively) and therefore can be allocated a weighting. At the moment I'm struggling with how to assess 'defence' v 'attack' (key personnel missing), and also whether or not travelling distance has an effect on matches. We all know that there are millions of stats out there - but which are the ones that really do have a bearing on match outcome?
