When I joined the forum I don't think I noticed dates for the first week. You click on links to older threads and forget you're in a different thread (or perhaps a different forum). It's quite amusing when old threads are brought up again though.

Just about the perfect description of my views on God. I'd only add that although I'm agnostic I try to live by religious values. Ignoring the fundamentalist loonies, most religions describe entirely reasonable and laudable ways to live your life. I know some will point to the awful things down under the guise of religion, but good at least equals, and I think surpasses, evil.

I googled that. God there is one of the pre-christ ancient greek gods who all had their own specialist areas eg zeus - the sky, poseidon - the sea, Hades - hell etc.
We've always had a need (well quite a few of us, at least) to believe in some higher power.
Also noticed Robert Kennedy quoted that verse after Martin Luther King's assasination.
So whether God exists or not, or you are a believer or not, the power and meaning of those words is crystal clear.

It’s also why (regardless of belief) the opening to the Gospel according to John is so powerful.

Mind you, the question does arise about which god you are talking about. The old testament (10 commandments) says "Thou shalt have no other gods before Me" upon pain of death.

Gazuty has tweaked my curiosity. Not only the existence of God (regardless of which one) but how christian teaching actually came into "the public domain" rather than only existing in academic, theological study. I'd always assumed the bible arrived with a sort of a splat while Jesus was alive or directly after via his disciples.
But it looks much more like a detective ptrocess with historians and academics piecing together the story over centuries.

I don't say there is no God anymore. People get too upset. It's always refreshing to meet a religious person that can discuss the subject without lsoing the plot.
Even more so when I meet someone that confesses that maintaining their belief is a constant WIP.

But yes, so may Gods to choose from. I did once consider really digging deep into a religion but then realised I was seriously assessing each religion as a candidate in the same way I might assess what car to buy next.

Yes, it is interesting... And if you want to look into Christianity the Council of Nicea is a good place to start.

What's isn't mentioned in that article however is that Constantine (a pagan) convened that council because he wanted stability in his empire (too much fighting going on between different factions of "Christianity"... And when they couldn't agree on the divine nature of God the Son and his relationship to God the Father he (the pagan emperor) decided for them, whist giving carte blanche to the winning faction to kill anyone who disagreed (which continued under the popes for another 1000 years)..

OK sorry. Watched a Sky History montage from Ancient Aliens and it hopped around from anonymous interviews to selected text from the bible and I got fed up when one of the contributors suggested there is currently an alien civilsation buried deep in Antartica. What baffles me is how Sky categorise this as History?
What do I make of the show? It seems to me on a par with the ghost hunter shows. Sorry if this offends you, but I think it's drivel.

I wasn't offended by the show at all, I think some questions are just fun to ask. And often far more interesting than the answers themselves.

I imagine the only way I could ever be offended is if I had all the answers already.

So I really don't have any problems with the idea of questioning the status quo.
