I agree, but I'm not sure that pushing the nuclear button and self-destructing is the solution. :)

I'd much rather the captain of the ship try to avoid the iceberg than plough straight into it! That said, the current captain is more interested in winning the next election than taking serious action, and maybe a huge crash is the only thing that's going to bring about the changes needed.

Maybe it's a case of that old cliche that you need to hit rock bottom before you can make real change...

athletics crowds are like a bit like tennis crowds, quite posh and polite and not really representative!

I've lived in Scotland for nearly a year now - first in Edinburgh and now in Falkirk - and I can honestly say that I haven't detected the slightest hostility from anyone I've spoken with as a result of my English accent.

Although technically I'm in a foreign country, it doesn't feel like it. It's like living in a part of England with a regional accent - I haven't noticed any big cultural differences.

to continue your analogy the captain turned round at the first sign of ice (the financial crisis) after leaving Southampton and is currently lost somewhere in the Barents Sea running low on fuel (credit expansion) with his engines (productive growth) spluttering, but is on the tanoy telling his passengers they're just gonna be a bit late!!!

Nice analogy, although you can't blame the captain for pretending that everything is fine.

That way, he avoids people panicking needlessly. Meanwhile, he's privately hoping against hope that the engines will suddenly roar back into life rather than grinding to a permanent halt.

Final polls are showing a small but solid lead of around 4% for NO, with few undecideds left. YES vote price has drifted out to 5.40 on Betfair. I think the Nays have it!

Betfair Sportsbook has already paid out on NO! Obviously, very confident now that NO has this won.

That should be changed to 'Betfair pays out £10 to the one sportsbook member who managed to get a bet on'

I imagine Betfair are cleaning up.

The sportsbook is offering a miserly 4.5 on Yes, meaning that Betfair can lay at 4.5 and immediately back at 5.4, giving themselves a nice green.

It's surprising they can get away with it. If Sainsbury's sold two identical tins of beans in the same store, one at 45p and one at 54p, you wouldn't expect many people to buy the more expensive product, yet people do the equivalent of that when they use the sportsbook.

'there is no way that the groups under the banner of Yes could actually work together; they’re all fighting for fundamentally different things. How can the Greens reconcile themselves with the ‘let’s make Scotland a new Saudi Arabia’ oil barons? How can the radical left reconcile themselves with the pro-capitalist Business for Scotland group? Or the L.G.B.T Yes Youth community find common cause with elderly Calvinist nationalists or with the millionaire SNP donor who backed Clause 28. Instead converts chant the same mantra – YES – to cover all the cracks between their mutual hatred.'

Very interesting article - http://wakeupscotland.wordpress.com/201 ... ged-to-no/

There's been pretty much non-stop coverage on the BBC news website: news.bbc.co.uk (although don't expect it to be free from bias! )
